What listening fatigue actually is
Listening fatigue is the tiredness — sometimes exhaustion — that adults with hearing loss experience after prolonged conversation, especially in noisy settings. It has a measurable cognitive basis: the brain reallocates working-memory resources to decode degraded speech, leaving less capacity for other tasks. After hours of this reallocation, mental fatigue accumulates. Restaurants, weddings, family gatherings and open-plan offices become disproportionately draining.
The clinical metric is Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) loss. Adults with normal hearing understand speech even when background noise is nearly as loud as the speaker (SNR of 0 to +3 dB).
