Custom In-Canal (CIC/IIC) vs Slim-RIC Hearing Aids: 2026 Clinical Decision Guide

Slim-RIC (Receiver-in-Canal). The dominant modern hearing aid style. A slim processor sits behind the ear; a thin wire carries the receiver (speaker) into the ear canal, where a soft silicone dome seats it. Custom in-canal (CIC / IIC). The processor, receiver and microphone are all housed in a small custom-moulded shell that sits inside the ear canal. IIC (Invisible-in-Canal) sits deep — invisible from outside. CIC (Completely-in-Canal) sits slightly less deep. Fits mild-to-moderate loss where cosmetic invisibility is the primary driver. • Phone use. Traditional phone use puts the receiver near the microphone in slim-RIC (feedback risk) but the in-canal position naturally resolves this.

For 80–85% of new adult wearers with mild-to-moderately-severe sensorineural loss, slim-RIC (Signia Styletto IX) is the clinical default. Sound quality, streaming, rechargeability and handling advantages outweigh the invisibility gain of a custom device.
