Getting a Hearing Test in India: What to Expect
Before and during the test
A full evaluation takes 30–45 minutes: case history (medications, noise exposure, family history), otoscopy (checking the canal and eardrum — wax alone is sometimes the whole problem), then pure-tone audiometry in which you press a button whenever you hear beeps at different pitches and volumes, per ear. Speech audiometry follows — repeating words at controlled levels — because word understanding, not beep detection, is what daily life demands.
Reading your audiogram
The audiogram plots the softest level you hear at each frequency (250 Hz to 8 kHz). Points falling below 20 dB are normal; the depth and slope of the curve define your degree and pattern of loss. A downward-sloping high-frequency curve — by far the most common adult pattern — explains the 'hear but don't understand' complaint precisely.
Home audiometry across India
Our visiting audiologists carry calibrated portable audiometers, performing the same pure-tone and speech battery at your dining table — the clinically accepted approach for home-bound and elderly patients. The audiogram is yours to keep regardless of whether you buy anything, and it is the exact file used to program any hearing aid you trial.
